South Africa to host the 2019 Pan African Mathematics Olympiad (PAMO)

The 27th Pan African Mathematics Olympiad (PAMO) is taking place in South Africa from

31 March to 6 April 2019. A record number of 13 countries have registered for this prestigious event hosted by the South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF) and the African Institute for Mathematical Science (AIMS) in Muizenberg, Cape Town.

The South African team was selected from the top learners who participated in the 2018 Final Round of the South African Mathematics Olympiad (SAMO) and other SAMF Olympiad training programmes organised by the South African Mathematics Foundation. The following learners have been selected:

Danielle Kleyn                    Grade 11                             Parel Vallei High School in Cape Town

Juliette Roux                      Grade 9                               Herschel Girls’ School in Cape Town

Alex Sinclair-Smith            Grade 9                               Westerford High School in Cape Town

Kgaogelo Bopape             Grade 11                             Horizon High School in Johannesburg

Andi Qu                Grade 11                             St John’s College in Johannesburg

Emmanuel Rassou            Grade 9                               South African College High School in Cape Town

This team of bright young minds will go up against talented individuals from other African countries. Each country can enter up to six team members consisting of 3 girls and 3 boys. The girls will also compete against other African girls in PAMO-G, which is the mathematics Olympiad for girls.

PAMO is an event of the African Mathematics Union (AMU) organised each year in an African Country where the best pupils in Mathematics of the Secondary Education who are less than twenty (20) years old, are invited to compete. It aims to encourage mathematical talent and exchange information on curricula and teaching methods in mathematics across the African continent. This great opportunity will not only open up doors for these young mathletes, it will also broaden their problem solving skills. They will learn how to tackle mathematical problems differently as they interact with learners from other African countries. The contestants will write 2 exams of 4.5 hours each covering algebra, geometry, number theory, combinatorics and probability.

In 2018 the South African team did extremely well at both PAMO and PAMO-G and walked away in 1st place in both divisions. Danielle Kleyn was crowned African queen of mathematics last year when South Africa obtained one gold, four silver and one bronze medals. South Africa last hosted the prestigious event in 2009. Thus far 13 countries have registered for the 2019 PAMO namely Botswana, Cote d’Ivore, Ghana, Morocco, Malawi, Senegal, Uganda, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia and Zimbabwe who has not participated since 2009.

The 2019 event is sponsored by Old Mutual Limited and Swiss Re. Dot Field, General Manager for Corporate Affairs at Old Mutual Limited, the main sponsors of the 2019 PAMO says: “Education, and particularly, improving scarce skills like mathematics and science has long been a priority focus area for us at Old Mutual. As a responsible business firmly anchored in Africa, we are committed to empowering the communities in which we operate and we are exceptionally proud to be able to do this through our support for this round of PAMO.”
