International Mathematical Olympiad team announcement

Friday, 13 May 2016

Six South African high school learners have been selected to participate in the 57th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) to be held in Hong Kong from the 6 - 16 July 2016. Last year this prestigious Olympiad took place in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

The competition dates as far back as 1959 when Romania hosted the first ever IMO. Today there are over 100 countries from five different continents that will be participating. In this Olympiad questions testing advanced thinking skills are chosen from mathematical topics including Geometry, Combinatorics, Number Theory and Algebra. The IMO brings young minds together not only for competition purposes but also for instilling a spirit of friendship. The team has been selected based on the results of last year’s South African Mathematics Olympiad (SAMO), followed by an intensive training programme.

The following learners have been selected:

Nicholas Kroon Grade 12 St Andrew's College in Grahamstown
Andrew McGregor Grade 12 Rondebosch Boys High School in Cape Town
Mohammed Yaseen Mowzer Grade 12 Fairbairn College in Cape Town
Sanjiv Ranchod Grade 12 Westerford High School in Cape Town
Bronson Rudner Grade 12 South African College High School in Cape Town
David Broodryk Grade 12 Westerford High School in Cape Town

For the first time in South African IMO history the same team that participated in 2015 (as grade 11 learners) was selected again. This will mean that they are much more familiar with the type of questions that are asked at the IMO and have gained valuable experience. In 2015 South Africa was ranked in the 55th position having moved up by 9 positions. The team will be accompanied by Dr Dirk Basson (leader) and Phil Labushagne (deputy leader).

Prof Johann Engelbrecht, Executive Director of the SAMF encourages the mathematical interaction of high school pupils from across the globe. “Competing with young minds from all over the world is a wonderful experience and we wish the South African team the best of luck.”
