2019 National Science Week crowns Mathematics Quiz winner

The South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF) hosted mathematical activities during the 20th National Science Week (NSW) to share the beauty and importance of mathematics at Mams Mall in Mamelodi, Pretoria. The NSW is an annual week-long event coordinated by the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA) on behalf of the Department of Science and Technology (DST).

The NSW is a countrywide celebration of science, technology, engineering, mathematics and innovation (STEMI) exposing the public and learners to the wonders of science. The goal of NSW is to contribute to the development of a society that is knowledgeable about science, critically engaged and scientifically literate in line with the Science Engagement strategy of the DST. Each year a different theme is chosen and the activities are offered around the theme. The 2019 theme was “Facing the harsh realities of climate change“. The NSW is presented in all nine provinces simultaneously at multiple sites per province.

During the 2019 NSW week daily Mathematics puzzles were published on www.samf.ac.za and on SAMF’s social media pages. The puzzles were interactive and encouraged online users to participate.

SAMF hosted a Mathematics Quiz at Mams Mall where primary school learners from Mamelodi went head to head for the 2019 Maths Quiz Battle title. Four schools participated in the quiz, namely Sediba sa Thuto Primary School, Meetse a Bophelo Primary School, Emthunzini Primary School and Nellmapius Primary School with approximately 14 learners participating from each school. The Maths Quiz Battle winner was Jabulile Skhosana from Meetse a Bophelo Primary School, second place went to Palesa Tsotetsi from Nellmapius Primary School and third place to Tatenda Phaolosi from Emthunzini Primary School. Learners also played fun mathematical games at the Mall.

Jabulile Skhosana from Meetse a Bophelo Primary School was ecstatic after being crowned the 2019 Maths Quiz Battle winner. “Competing  against other learners from Mamelodi was challenging, but I eventually managed to outsmart my peers. This has made my love for mathematics grow even more than ever,” she said.
