The South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF) announced last week that teachers nationwide can now register their learners for the country's two best-known mathematics competitions. For the first time in the Foundation’s history, both competitions have full digital capabilities for the registration and payment processes and the first-round papers.

On 14 January 2022, global communities will celebrate World Logic Day. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared the day in partnership with the International Council for Philosophy and Human Sciences (CIPSH). This global day of observance aims to bring the intellectual history, conceptual significance and practical implications of logic to the attention of interdisciplinary science communities and the broader public.
The South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF) announced its 2022 mathematics programmes earlier this week. The programmes offer learner development and teacher enrichment for all primary and high schools nationwide. Programme sponsors include Old Mutual, NESTLÉ NESPRAY, the South African Institute for Chartered Accounting (SAICA) and the Actuarial Society of South Africa (ASSA).
On Saturday, 16 October 2021, the South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF) announced the Top Achievers in its flagship learner development programmes which are sponsored by Old Mutual, NESTLÉ NESPRAY South Africa, and the South African Institute for Chartered Accountants (SAICA). Emmanuel Rassou, a Grade 11 learner from the South African College High School in Cape Town, received a gold medal and was declared the Overall Winner of the Senior Division of the Old Mutual South African Mathematics Olympiad (SAMO). Noah Greenblatt, a Grade 7 learner from King David Primary School in Linksfield, Johannesburg, was declared the Overall Winner of the Senior Division of the NESTLÉ NESPRAY South African Mathematics Challenge (SAMC).
Who is SA's Top High School Mathematics Team? -Tuesday, 14 September 2021
On Saturday, 11 September, high school learners from across the country participated in the ASSA South African Mathematics Team Competition. The Competition is a South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF) initiative sponsored by the Actuarial Society of South Africa (ASSA).
For the past 44 years, primary school learners across the country have participated in the annual South African Mathematics Challenge (SAMC). This year is no different. On Friday, 10 September, 478 learners from 136 schools countrywide competed in the third and final round. In addition, special training was provided for learners and teachers at 13 centralised venues before the writing of the final round.
UKZN student wins Maths Olympiad -Monday, 23 August 2021
On Saturday, 21 August 2021, university students from across the country competed in the ASSA South African Tertiary Mathematics Olympiad (SATMO). Aaron Naidu, from the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal, Ralph McDougall, from Stellenbosch University and Tim Schlesinger, from the University of Cape Town, walked away in the joint first place. James M Louw, from the University of Pretoria, took 1st place in the post-grad division.
Last week, six high school learners participated in the 62nd International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), sponsored by Old Mutual and the South African Institute for Chartered Accountants (SAICA). Russia, the host country, announced the results during the virtual closing ceremony on Saturday, 24 July 2021. The South African team walked away with three bronze medals and one honourable mention.
On Wednesday, 28 July 2021, roughly 218 learners from 104 schools across the country will participate in the third and final round of the Old Mutual South African Mathematics Olympiad (SAMO).
Last week, six young South African mathematicians took part in the 28th Pan-African Mathematical Olympiad (PAMO), hosted by Tunisia. Eleven countries participated in this year's virtual event. Morocco took first place, with South Africa second, followed by Tunisia and Algeria in joint third place. The South African team received two gold, one silver, and two bronze medals.
