Improve learners’ critical thinking skills by entering the 2018 SA Mathematics Challenge

Grade 4-7 learners are invited to partake in the South African Mathematics Challenge (SAMC) which is taking place in the week of the 07th to 11th of May 2018. This will enable learners to attain the necessary problem solving skills.

Teachers are encouraged to enter their primary school learners for the 2018 SAMC.  The closing date for entries is on the 26th of April.  The Challenge is a national competition for primary school learners and is endorsed by the Department of Basic Education.  It aims to improve conceptual knowledge, the application of knowledge in new situations, problem solving, reasoning, communication and general mathematical thinking.

The First Round consists of separate papers for Grades 4-7.  Each paper is an hour long and consists of 20 multiple choice questions. An entry fee between R8 and R25 per learner is charged to cover operational expenses.   Learners who obtain at least 50% in the First Round will qualify for the Final Round on the 1st of August.

 

Professor Johann Engelbrecht, Executive Director at the South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF), encourages all primary schools in the country to enter the SAMC. “The Mathematics Challenge is one of the key vehicles to improve problem solving skills and enable learners from a young age to think outside of the box,” said Professor Engelbrecht.

Awards such as the Best Performing School, Best New Performing School, Best Participating School and Best Performing per Quantile are presented at the SAMF annual award function to be held later this year.
