The South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF) is proud to announce the launch of a new book to help learners from Grades 7 to 12 improve their mathematics skills. The book, 1000 Mathematics Olympiad Problems, by Prof Poobhalan Pillay, has been a work-in-progress since 2014 and he spent more than 8,000 hours to compile it.
Last week, six high school learners participated in the 61st International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). The results were announced during the virtual closing ceremony earlier today and the South African team walked away with three bronze medals and three honourable mentions.
This Saturday, the 14th of March 2020 is a worldwide celebration of the International Day of Mathematics (IDM). This year’s theme “Mathematics is everywhere” aims to celebrate the beauty and importance of mathematics and its essential role in everyday life. Siyanqoba Wits Senior Team A team retained their ASSA Mathematics Team Competition crown on Saturday the 7th of September. The Siyanqoba Wits Junior Team A won the competition for the first time this year. 102 teams from 25 centres participated in the competition organised by the South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF).
The South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF) hosted mathematical activities during the 20th National Science Week (NSW) to share the beauty and importance of mathematics at Mams Mall in Mamelodi, Pretoria. The NSW is an annual week-long event coordinated by the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA) on behalf of the Department of Science and Technology (DST).
South Africa moves up in rankings at International Mathematical Olympiad
South Africa won four bronze medals at the 60th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) and is ranked 46th out of 112 countries. The United Kingdom hosted the world’s brightest mathletes from the 10th till the 22nd of July 2019.
NESTLÉ NESPRAY brought together stakeholders in education and nutrition sectors both private and public in a panel discussion to discuss solutions aimed at boosting learner’s mathematics performance of primary school learners in the intermediate phase in South Africa. At the event they launched the NESTLÉ NESPRAY South African Mathematics Challenge, an annual competition for primary school learners organised by the South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF).
