Meet SA’s Top Mathematics Teams

Friday, 23 September 2022

The South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF) is glad to reveal the ASSA SA Mathematics Teams Competition winners. 2 570 learners from 55 regions contested for the top spot, but the Western Province Junior 1 and Boland Senior 1 teams won their respective divisions.

The Actuarial Society of South Africa (ASSA) sponsors the Team Competition in September each year. Each team enters two teams of ten: Junior (grades 8 and 9), Senior (grades 10, 11 and 12) and may also enter B, C, and D-teams at each level. The first part of the Competition is a one-hour individual problem paper, consisting of fifteen problems in multiple-choice format. After a break for refreshments and a discussion of team strategy, the second part of the Competition takes place. The second paper consists of ten quite difficult problems, but now the teams may work together and must give just one set of answers.

This year's top teams are:

The top 3 Junior teams (Grades 8-9):

1st: Western Province Junior 1

2nd: Boland Junior 1

3rd: Wits Siyanqoba Junior 2

The top 3 Senior teams (Grades 10-12):

1st: Boland Senior 1

2nd: Western Province Senior 1

3rd: Wits Siyanqoba Senior 2

The Western Province Junior 1 team consisted of:

"Teamwork is vital for successful teams in today's competitive business environment. That is the reason we encourage teamwork from an early age," explains Michelle Abrahams, Member Engagement Executive at the ASSA. "Teamwork cultivates empathy, builds trust, and encourages innovation. We are proud of every team that took part in the 2022 Team Competition but want to single out the top three teams of each division. Well done to you all and keep up the good work."

The SAMF encourages learners who want to take part in the Team Competition to enter the South African Mathematics Olympiad (SAMO). Registrations for the 2023 SAMO open in January each year.
