A Lifelong Dedication to Mathematics

Tuesday, 27 August 2024

As the South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF) celebrates its 20th anniversary, it is fitting to highlight the contributions of Hendrik de Kock, a pivotal figure in the organisation. Hendrik's journey with SAMF is a testament to his dedication and passion for mathematics education.

Hendrik's career began in 1981 as a mathematics teacher. His love for the subject and his dedication to education led him to the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), where he specialised in educational research and assessment. This role allowed him to delve deeply into the challenges learners face with mathematics, equipping him to address these issues effectively.

In 1994, Hendrik was invited to join the Mathematics Olympiad Committee, making him the longest-standing member of the South African Mathematics Olympiad Problem Committee. His involvement over the past 30 years has been a source of immense joy for Hendrik, as he has seen the growth and development of the competition over the years.

When the SAMF took over the administration of the Olympiad in 2004, it marked a new era for the competition. Hendrik recalled the early days when committee meetings were formal affairs, with members donning suits to set the exam papers. Initially, there were only two rounds for junior competitors and three for seniors. However, in 2003, Hendrik and his colleague, Thomas Hagspihl, saw the need for a third round for juniors, which led to the establishment of the junior final round in 2004. This addition has been a staple for over two decades, highlighting the foundation's commitment to nurturing young mathematical talent.

Reflecting on his favourite memories, Hendrik emphasised his love for problem-solving and the creative challenge it presents. He fondly recounted moments when learners solved problems in ways that even the committee hadn't anticipated, showcasing their innovative thinking. This creativity and critical thinking are skills that Hendrik believes are crucial not just for mathematics, but for life in general.

Hendrik, an accomplished author of numerous mathematics textbooks and SAMF’s publication ‘Enjoying Mathematics 2’, stresses the importance of going beyond the curriculum. He believes that fostering analytical thinking and problem-solving skills prepares learners for diverse careers, from engineering to medicine. His research into learner assessment has shown that many learners initially find the Olympiad daunting, but that, with the right support and encouragement, they can develop the necessary skills and confidence.

To support educators, the SAMF provides past papers and detailed model answers online. This resource empowers teachers to guide learners through challenging problems, fostering a collaborative learning environment. Hendrik's passion for empowering both learners and teachers is clear in his commitment to this initiative.

One of the standout aspects of the Olympiad, according to Hendrik, is the sense of community it fosters. He shared insights from past winners who found camaraderie and inspiration at mathematics training camps. This community aspect is vital, as it allows learners to engage with peers and mentors, enhancing their problem-solving skills and building lifelong friendships.

Hendrik's own journey began in Pretoria, where inspirational teachers ignited his passion for mathematics. He credits these early influences for his decision to pursue a career in education. Despite the allure of more lucrative careers in engineering or the corporate world, Hendrik stays steadfast in his belief that his true calling is teaching mathematics. He views his role as a teacher not just as a profession, but as a vocation to inspire the next generation.

Encouraging mathematically gifted individuals to consider teaching as a career is a challenge Hendrik acknowledges. He hopes that more people will see the value in shaping young minds and contributing to the future of mathematics education. Hendrik's message to the SAMF is one of gratitude and optimism. He congratulates the foundation on its achievements and hopes it will continue to grow, inspiring more learners and teachers to engage with mathematics.

In conclusion, Hendrik de Kock's contributions to the SAMF and the South African Mathematics Olympiad are invaluable. His dedication to fostering a love for mathematics and problem-solving in learners and teachers alike has left a lasting impact. As SAMF looks to the future, Hendrik's legacy of passion and commitment will continue to inspire and guide the organisation towards even greater achievements.
