The South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF) has recorded its highest-ever participation in the South African Mathematics Olympiad (SAMO) in 2026, alongside the strongest post-COVID participation in the South African Mathematics Challenge (SAMC). These results reflect steady growth and renewed national engagement in mathematics.
In 2026, the SAMC reached more than 109,000 learners, marking its highest participation since the COVID-19 pandemic. This is a 41% growth in learners from 2025. While this is not the record, it shows steady recovery and renewed participation. The highest recorded participation remains 111,297 learners in 2014.
The SAMO achieved a new milestone in 2026, with participation reaching more than 123,000 learners in 2026, a 40% growth in learners compared to last year’s event. Over a longer period, participation has grown significantly from earlier years, showing the expanding reach of the Olympiad.
The SAMO, first held in 1966, continues to identify and support high-performing learners. The SAMC, introduced in 1977, builds interest at an earlier stage and strengthens the pathway into the SAMO. Both competitions recorded the highest number of participating schools, namely 1 271 for the SAMC and 1 891 for the SAMO; a growth of 40% and 47% respectively.
Beyond participation numbers, the competitions play a key role in promoting mathematics as a gateway subject and in developing problem-solving skills and analytical thinking. These are not only academic strengths. They are practical skills that prepare learners to think clearly, make sound decisions, and adapt in a changing world. Strong mathematical ability supports innovation, drives productivity, and contributes to economic growth across sectors.
To supplement mathematics offered in the school curriculum the SAMO and SAMC offer an additional space for learners who enjoy thinking through complex mathematical problems.
Because these competitions are not curriculum-based, any learner with an interest in puzzles and problem-solving can take part. The questions are challenging, but that is part of their value. It is encouraged that learners begin participating in these activities from primary school level, as it builds confidence and resilience over time as they learn how to approach unfamiliar problems.
Prof Seithuti Moshokoa, Executive Director of SAMF, said the results reflect the combined effort of many partners. “We are encouraged by the continued growth in participation across both competitions, especially the increase in the number of participating schools. This progress would not be possible without the support of our schools, educators, learners, provincial departments, and our sponsors. We thank all stakeholders who continue to invest in developing mathematical talent and creating opportunities for learners to build problem-solving and analytical skills that contribute to the future of our economy.”
This record year reflects more than increased numbers. It shows growing confidence in mathematics as a subject that opens doors. It also highlights the importance of sustained investment in education that builds both skills and curiosity.
As participation continues to grow, SAMF remains focused on quality, inclusion, and long-term impact. The 2026 results mark a strong step forward in building a culture of mathematical thinking across South Africa.
