Komatsu Adopted Schools Programme

The Komatsu Adopted Schools Mathematics Training Programme is a community upliftment initiative funded by Komatsu Foundation Trust and managed by the South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF) aiming to:
  • Empower Teachers
  • Inspire Learners
  • Transform Communities

The programme benefits teachers/educators and learners at secondary school level aiming to identify and nurture talent in science, engineering, and technology from areas where Komatsu has operations:

  • Mopani and Waterberg (Limpopo)
  • Nkangala (Mpumalanga)
  • John Taolo Gaetsewe, Namakwa and ZF Mgcawu (Northern Cape)

The Komatsu Adopted Schools Programme focuses on two primary areas for high school mathematics.

Teacher Empowerment Learner Development

Development of educators in mathematics from areas where Komatsu is operating with the focus on the intervention of subject content and methodology.

  • Since 2024, 581 teachers attended the Maths Problem Solving Course to develop their skills in solving non-routine mathematical problems.
  • 4 teachers received a grant to attend the AFRICME7 Conference.

Grade 8 to 12 learners from the same schools participate in the South African Mathematics Olympiad (SAMO) through entrance fee support and other support such as the provision of additional resources to improve learner performance.

  • 4 learners qualified for the 2025 Final Round of the SAMO. Their qualification highlights an outstanding achievement, placing them among the top 200 learners nationally.

Teacher Testimonials Learner Testimonials

"The training improved my confidence and knowledge. I can now introduce problem-solving in a way that excites my learners."

"I learnt different strategies to make lessons more interactive. The methods I use now encourage learners to think for themselves instead of relying on rote learning."

"The training and support have not only benefited me as an educator but have inspired my learners to see mathematics as something exciting and achievable."

"Always see an opportunity to learn - approach each problem as a chance to discover something new. Write the maths Olympiad not just to compete, but also to learn and grow through the process."

"To learners who want to participate in the maths Olympiad, I suggest that they just go for it. By just writing the first round, they have already gained valuable experience, even if they don't progress to the next round."
