Top 200 high school learners tackle final round of Maths Olympiad

Monday, 26 July 2021

On Wednesday, 28 July 2021, roughly 218 learners from 104 schools across the country will participate in the third and final round of the Old Mutual South African Mathematics Olympiad (SAMO).

This nationwide mathematics competition for high school learners is organised by the South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF) and sponsored by Old Mutual and the South African Institute for Chartered Accountants (SAICA). The first-ever SAMO took place in 1966 and has since grown to the most prestigious mathematics competition in South Africa.

This year, 58,801 Grade 8 to 12 learners from 788 schools participated in the first round in March. A further 12,542 learners from 640 schools qualified for the second round in May. The top 108 Seniors (Grades 10 to 12) and the top 110 Juniors (Grades 8 and 9) from the second round will participate in the final round later this week.

SAMF will acknowledge the top learners and schools for their achievements at the annual SAMF Virtual Awards Function on 16 October.

"I would like to take this opportunity to wish the learners all the best for the upcoming final round," says Prof Kerstin Jordaan, the executive director at the SAMF. "Moreover, I wish to thank all the teachers and parents for their continued assistance to create a mathematically empowering environment. One that grants opportunities for all learners to progress to their fullest potential."

She concluded that "mathematics plays a significant role in the technological environment and participation in the Olympiad is just one of the measures that instill a culture of mathematics amongst the South African youth."
