Empower Learners Through Maths: SA Mathematics Challenge and Olympiad Registration Open!

Monday, 05 February 2024

The South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF) is thrilled to announce the opening of registration for two prestigious events: the South African Mathematics Challenge (SAMC) and the South African Mathematics Olympiad (SAMO). These competitions, integral to SAMF's mission, provide a platform for learners to display their mathematical prowess and critical thinking skills.

The Challenge, currently in its 47th year, caters to primary school learners (Grades 4 to 7) and is set to kick off on 11 March. Mr Ashley Ah Goo, the chairperson of the Problem Committee for the Challenge, emphasised its unique approach to developing analytical thinking skills beyond the classroom. "The Challenge is not just a competition; it's a journey of growth for learners. Entering maths competitions from an early age will expose learners to problem-solving techniques not necessarily covered in the curriculum. This will help them in higher grades and prepare them for participation in the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) when they are in high school. We invite teachers to register their learners and be part of this transformative experience."

The Olympiad, sponsored by Old Mutual and the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA), is designed for high school learners (Grades 8 to 12) and will begin on 14 March. The first SAMO took place in 1966 and it is still a prestigious school event focusing on nurturing problem-solving skills and critical thinking among participants. Mr Thomas Hagspihl, the chairperson for the Problem Committee for the Olympiad, says: "The Olympiad is a platform for high school learners to challenge themselves and excel in mathematics. Doing well in this competition opens doors not only to universities but also to future employers, who certainly look for problem-solving skills and not just rote learning in mathematics. We encourage teachers to register their learners and be part of this enriching experience."

The Foundation invites all interested teachers and schools to participate in these impactful competitions, contributing to developing a mathematically proficient generation. Registration closes on 28 February 2024.
