The South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF) is pleased to announce the results of the teams representing South Africa in two international mathematics competitions last month. The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) took place from 6-16 July in Oslo, Norway, while the Pan African Mathematics Olympiad (PAMO) took place from 19-28 June in Benguerir, Morocco. Teams travelled to the locations for the first time since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The country faces a predicament as almost half of its teachers retire without a sufficient supply of new teachers to take their places. Primary and secondary schools in South Africa are already battling poor mathematics results. The concern around the supply and demand of knowledgeable teachers further complicates the situation.

The United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and UN-Women, declared the Day in collaboration with institutions and civil society partners aiming to advance women and girls in science. This Day is an occasion to encourage full and equal admittance to and participation in science for women and girls.
The South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF) is hosting a Mathematics Talent Search for learners between Grades 7 and 12. The Talent Search is a project in partnership with MyTutor.chat, a free online mathematics tutoring application.
