SAMF’s vision is to play a leading role in expanding the base of mathematics excellence in South Africa by contributing towards professional development of mathematics educators, promoting the advancement of mathematics through creating awareness of and developing skills in mathematics, research, advocacy and identifying and nurturing of mathematically talented youth towards an innovative landscape in South Africa for science, business, finance and engineering.

1000 Mathematical Olympiad Problems

Prof Pillay compiled A Training Manual for South African Mathematics Olympiads in 2014. This publication has been extensively revised and extended, the new title being 1000 Mathematical Olympiad Problems is the subsequent publication. This 637-page eBook is like its predecessor, is directed to all learners who participate in Mathematics Olympiads, but is nonetheless suitable for all learners who take mathematics at school. Learners and coaches/teachers are provided the wherewithal to select both topics and cognitive levels of their choice. In particular, teachers can teach a lesson which is in the curriculum and select problems for the book which are more challenging than the ones that routinely appear in school textbooks. In this way problem solving skills of all learners would be greatly enhanced. The large number of problems allow for a great deal of flexibility; the cognitive range of the problems (level 2 to level 10) makes them suitable for learners ranging from Grades 7 to Grades 12. Higher level problems cater for Round 2 and Round 3 qualifiers, and even PAMO qualifiers.

Earlier this afternoon the South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF) and Old Mutual hosted the 2020 Annual Awards Function as a live broadcast on the SAMF YouTube channel. The event honoured learners, schools, and teachers that achieved in the various development programmes run by the organisation every year.
The quality of mathematics education in South Africa has been a topic of discussion for many years. Mathematically gifted learners tend to seek careers in software development, medicine, engineering, and accounting. It is unusual for mathematically talented students to pursue a teaching career, which presents the country with severe challenges in terms of mathematics education.
On Saturday, 17 October 2020 a total of 111 teams from 25 regions competed for the top team position in the ASSA South African Mathematics Team Competition sponsored by the Actuarial Society of South Africa.
